PeaZip 9.9: New Internal Drag and Drop Features Enhance the Open-Source Archive Manager

PeaZip 9.9 has been released today for this open-source, free, and cross-platform file compression and encryption software featuring both GTK and Qt graphical user interfaces.

Highlights of PeaZip 9.9 include support for performing internal drag-and-drop extraction from the file browser/archive browser to the sidebar that shows the Bookmarks, History, and filesystem tree views. Users will be able to extract one or more entire archives or selected archive content while browsing archives.

The new PeaZip release also adds a new “Extract here” quick link on the right of the toolbar, which is displayed when browsing an archive, improves the System tools menu for Linux users, adds the ability to show when the app is running as root, and revamps the task launcher GUI.

On top of that, PeaZip 9.9 improves the reading of DMG, IMG, RPM, and SQUASHFS files as archives, updates the compression Presets files to support the latest options set, and adds the ability to test archives for encryption for list/test operations, which will prompt users for encryption password if needed.

The Options screen has been updated as well for 7z/p7zip archives with a new option to show timestamps as UTC instead of local time, the ability to set the syntax level to 21.07 and 23.01 legacy versions, and a new group for TAR-related options under Options > Settings > Archive manager.

Under the hood, the PeaZip 9.9 release comes with an updated Zstandard (Zstd) lossless data compression algorithm to version 1.5.6 for both Linux and Windows, optional extra KDF rounds for triple cascaded encryption in the .PEA format, and Lazarus 3.4 support while the sources are still compatible with Lazarus 2.x.

Other than that, this release fixes the loading of Custom format in custom compression settings and browsing of some special cases of archives that contain items with absolute paths that start with directory separator characters. It also improves UAC elevation in the file browser for Windows systems.
