Today marks the launch of MX Linux 23.4, the latest release in the MX Linux 23 “Libretto” series, a Debian-based lightweight distribution designed for daily usage.
Following the release of MX Linux 23.3 nearly four months ago, MX Linux 23.4 arrives, building upon the Debian GNU/Linux 12.7 “Bookworm” release. This update includes a refresh of most packages to the latest versions found in Debian Bookworm’s repositories, including the stable Linux 6.1 LTS kernel.
In MX Linux 23.4, the AHS (Advanced Hardware Support) edition has been enhanced with newer firmware packages and Linux kernel 6.10.10, useful for those facing issues with the standard Linux 6.1 LTS kernel. The Linux 6.10 kernel is available in a Liquorix variant, promising enhanced responsiveness.
The release also updates Xfce 4.18 core packages and includes job-scheduling frontend for cron as a default in the Fluxbox edition. Further improvements include UI upgrades and a new feature in MX-USB-Unmounter to display a tray icon upon insertion of a removable device, as well as default LUKS2 encryption in MX-Live-USB-Maker.
The MX Packageinstaller tool has seen improvements in this update, featuring enhancements like the display of all installed packages across Enabled, Test, and Backports tabs, as well as a configured repository. It also introduces a new filter for showing solely verified Flatpak apps from Flathub within the Flatpak tab.
In addition, the KDE version has been upgraded with a better pipewire-setup-mx tool that enhances the reliability of PipeWire and WirePlumber startups using the SysVinit system. The MX Tweak tool also receives an update with a new KDE-specific option to manage the autostart of Plasma Discover’s system tray updater notifier.
The MX Linux Raspberry Pi edition has been updated too, incorporating the latest packages from MX Linux and Raspberry Pi OS repositories. MX Linux 23.4 can now be downloaded from the release announcement page, available across the usual Xfce, KDE Plasma, Fluxbox, and Raspberry Pi editions.
Existing MX Linux 23 “Libretto” users don’t need to download a new ISO release to keep their systems up to date. They can simply use the sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade commands in the Terminal app or employ a graphical package manager like the Synaptic Package Manager.
