Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” Public Beta Debuts: Features Linux 6.11 and GNOME 47

Today, Canonical unveiled the beta version of the soon-to-be-released Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) operating system for public testing, setting the stage for its official launch on October 10th, 2024.

With the final version just three weeks away, the beta release offers a sneak peek at what users can expect. The highlight of Ubuntu 24.10 is its inclusion of the newly released GNOME 47 desktop environment, alongside the cutting-edge Linux 6.11 kernel series.

Key features of Ubuntu 24.10 include an enhanced desktop installer that supports local file paths for autoinstall import, an updated Power Profiles Manager for optimal support of the latest hardware, particularly AMD processors, and improved functionalities in fingerprint device handling.

This release also introduces a new Security Center, which provides easy management of experimental permissions prompting for Home directory permissions. Moreover, enhancements in the App Center’s Manage page and further stability and performance improvements through patches in Mutter and GNOME Shell are also part of this update.

Another interesting feature in the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 release is for NVIDIA graphics users as the Oracular Oriole will default to Wayland instead of Xorg on machines using NVIDIA GPUs. As always there are many changes to defaults, mostly by newer versions of packages.

Under the hood, Ubuntu 24.10 comes with an updated toolchain that includes GCC 14.2, GNU Binutils 2.43.1, GNU C Library 2.40, LLVM 19, Rust 1.80, Go 1.23, OpenSSL 3.3, systemd 256.5, Netplan 1.1, and .NET 8.

If you want to take Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) for a test drive, download the beta version right now from the official website. However, please keep in mind that this is a pre-release version and it’s not recommended for use in production environments.

Beta images are available for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, and Cloud editions, as well as for the Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, and Ubuntu MATE official flavors.
