Shotcut 25.01 Video Editor Introduces Native Wayland Support for Linux Flatpak Users

Shotcut has released version 25.01 of its open-source video editing software, introducing significant updates for Linux users. This latest version, released over two months after Shotcut 24.11, includes native Wayland support within the Flatpak package, meaning it’s ideal for users running a GNU/Linux distribution with a Wayland session. For those looking to update, Shotcut is available for installation from Flathub.

The new release addresses several issues specifically on Wayland, such as fixing drag-and-drop functionality from the Source player and improving the color picker feature. Additionally, the option to open JACK Audio has been deprecated to eliminate the reliance on libjack.so.

Beyond these enhancements, Shotcut 25.01 brings several new features to the table. Users can now benefit from Bins and media type/text search in the Playlist, a new View > Files panel, and a “Show in Files” option for Properties and Jobs. The update also introduces a Gradient Map video filter and adds a Type parameter for the Fade In Audio and Fade Out Audio filters.

Other noteworthy changes include a newly added Settings > Player > Pause After Seek toggle, defaulting to the old behavior, and the introduction of HSL Primaries and HSL Range video filters. Compatibility has also improved for MLT XML clip/sub-projects, alongside hardware encoding export support for Windows on ARM CPUs with the h264_mf and hevc_mf codecs.

Shotcut 25.01 further refines the Playlist > Generate Slideshow feature by making it easier to create montages from trimmed video clips. It also upgrades the H.264 High Profile export preset for enhanced quality compared to YouTube standards.

For a complete overview of the changes and to download the software, users can refer to the official release notes. The software is accessible via a universal AppImage binary, allowing it to run on virtually any GNU/Linux distribution without installation.

This update promises to enhance the editing experience, cementing Shotcut’s status as a robust tool for video creators across platforms.
