A new version of Miracle-WM, a tiling window manager based on Mir and developed by Canonical engineer Matthew Kosarek, has been released, marking its first update this year. Miracle-WM 0.5 brings several enhancements and introduces animations, aiming to create a more appealing and user-friendly experience, distinguishing it from other window managers like Hyprland.
Key features of Miracle-WM 0.5 include:
- The ability to drag and drop container windows in the grid.
- Mouse-pointer movement for floating containers.
- A new mini tiling grid for floating windows.
- The implementation of command criteria compatible with i3 and sway.
Bug fixes in this update tackle various issues such as fullscreen windows layering, management of maximized/minimized windows, quirks with output reconnection, and improved animation smoothness. A substantial increase in test coverage and better build flags have also been made.
For those interested in trying Miracle-WM, it can be installed on Ubuntu via the official Miracle-WM snap or by adding the Miracle-WM PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Users need to log out of their current session and select the ‘miracle-wm’ option at the login screen.
Alternatively, Miracle-WM can be run in a window on a current desktop session using Wayland, making it ideal for testing purposes. Detailed configurations and customizations can be found in the project’s documentation.
