The Mozilla Firefox 126 open-source web browser is now up for grabs before its official launch on 14th May. This article examines the fresh features and enhancements in this release.
The notable changes in Firefox 126 comprise of the incorporation of “Linux” to Firefox for Android’s User-Agent string with the aim to sort out website compatibility issues, renaming of “add-ons” settings to “Extensions” in Firefox for Android for seamless unity with Firefox for desktop and addons.mozilla.org, and the activation of AV1 hardware decode speeding up on macOS for M3 Macs.
Moving on to the new features for web developers, Firefox 126 brings forth a choice to switch off or switch on the Developer Tools’ Split console function, backs CSS Custom :state() and CustomStateSet, and lends support for IDBFactory.databases enabling enumeration of IndexedDB databases.
Moreover, it adds the unchanging URL.parse() method, ensuring that it gives back null as opposed to the URL constructor, which throws when parsing is unsuccessful, and powers the CSS zoom attribute by default buoyed by great strides in web compatibility and normalization tasks within the CSSWG.
During beta testing, Firefox 126 shipped with a revamped Clear Data dialog promising a simpler and more unified way for clearing user data. However, it appears that this change didn’t make it in the final release. Another change that didn’t make it was a new “Show trending search suggestions” option in Search settings, which was also available during beta testing.
Mozilla Firefox 126 is available for download right now as a source tarball, DEB package, and binary packages for all supported platforms from Mozilla’s download server. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow, May 14th, if you want to update your existing installations via the OTA (Over-the-Air) update mechanism.
