Today, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation announced the release of AlmaLinux OS 10.1, also known as Heliotrope Lion. This new version serves as the first point release in the AlmaLinux OS 10 series and brings several noteworthy enhancements and features.
One of the key highlights is the support for the Btrfs file system, which has been incorporated both at the kernel and userspace levels. Therefore, users can now install AlmaLinux OS directly on a Btrfs filesystem from the outset. Eduard Abdullin commented on this addition, emphasizing that the initial integration covers the installer and storage management stack, with further support for Btrfs functionalities expected in future updates.
In addition to Btrfs support, AlmaLinux OS 10.1 enables the CRB repository by default for new installations, extending support specifically for x86_64_v2 processors. This update also introduces SPICE support and enables frame pointers by default.
The performance of AlmaLinux OS has been enhanced overall. Development tools have received updates as well, with the toolchain featuring prominent components such as GCC 15.1, GNU Binutils 2.44, GNU C Library 2.39, LLVM 20.1.8, Rust 1.88.0, Go 1.24, and Annobin 12.99. Other updated packages include NetworkManager 1.54, QEMU 10, Node.js 24, Podman 5.6.0, Mesa 25.0.7, Samba 4.22.4, Python 3.12.11, Apache 2.4.63, SSSD 2.11.1, SELinux-policy 42.1.7, OpenSSL 3.5, and more.
For those looking to explore the new features, AlmaLinux OS 10.1 can be downloaded from the official website, offering ISO images for various architectures including 64-bit (x86_64 and x86_64_v2), ARM64, PowerPC 64-bit Little Endian, and IBM System Z. Live and cloud images will also be available, along with containers.
This release primarily targets new users and those wishing to perform a fresh installation. Existing users can upgrade to the latest version by executing sudo dnf update in the terminal.
