Audacity 3.7.5: Bug Fixes and New Windows on ARM Builds

A new version of Audacity, a widely-used open-source audio editor, has been released. Audacity 3.7.5 focuses on bug fixes and improvements rather than introducing major new features, enhancing usability and stability for its users. Celebrating its 25th anniversary earlier this year, the Audacity team also launched a merch shop.

The key changes in Audacity 3.7.5 include:

  • Support for 32-bit PCM in the FLAC importer
  • Fixes that prevent crashes during spectrum view rendering
  • Changes to ensure importing WAV files up to 7ms no longer results in crashes
  • Improved functionality of the Macro Wizard

Several libraries have been updated, including libopus 1.5.2 and libcurl 8.12.1. Additionally, this version introduces beta support for Windows on ARM (WoA), although it comes with limitations such as a lack of plugin support and the requirement of a native WoA version of FFmpeg.

Audacity 3.7.x, including this release, is part of a broader strategy leading to the anticipated Audacity 4.0, which promises a complete overhaul of the user interface utilizing Qt, moving away from wxWidgets. This new version aims to enhance compatibility with modern hardware and updated input devices.

Audacity remains free and open-source, with support for users to download it from the project’s website or GitHub. The official Linux version is distributed as an AppImage, compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and higher. It is also available on Flathub and in the Snap Store, though the latter may not always have the latest version.

For those looking for earlier versions, they can also be accessed through Ubuntu repositories by running sudo apt install audacity.
