Calibre 8.4 has been released as a maintenance update by developer Kovid Goyal. This version of the open-source ebook management software enhances the KEPUB output and fixes various bugs. A significant addition in this release is the workaround for a Qt/Wayland bug that previously prevented the menu of the Layout button from displaying on Linux.
New features include an option for generating KEPUB files with improved text justification. However, this comes with a trade-off of potential gaps in highlighted sections when using Kobo ebook readers. The E-book viewer also sees notable improvements, such as a fix for a regression that disrupted the “show book in main calibre program” link, as well as better handling of links in large EPUB files.
Additionally, the Metadata Review dialog has improved tag merging capabilities. The release also updates the ebooks.com plugin, corrects navigation links in News Download, and introduces a new news source, Frieze Magazine. Other relevant updates involve enhancing the feeds from major news outlets like the NYTimes Book Review and the Washington Post.
Users can download Calibre 8.4 from the official website for various platforms, or install it as a Flatpak app via Flathub. For a comprehensive list of changes, refer to the release notes.
