Debian-based Grml has released version 2025.08 to mark the 32nd birthday of Debian. This latest version uses the newly launched Debian 13 "Trixie" and is supported by the long-term Linux 6.12 kernel. Grml 2025.08 brings users updated software packages, enhanced hardware support, and various bug fixes from earlier releases.
Among the significant updates in this release are the introduction of a new signing key for Grml repositories, enhancements to the lang=
boot option and grml-lang
tool, and the consolidation of previously separate packages like grml-autoconfig
, grml-etc
, grml-scripts
, and grml-udev-config
into the grml-live build system.
Moreover, the grml-live system can now support the creation of images based on Debian Forky (Testing), provide Hungarian and German keyboard support, and implement a new PACKAGE skip
feature in configuration lists. It also offers improved reproducibility for ISOs and adds better file accessibility for the bootstrap keyring.
The Zsh configuration in Grml 2025.08 has seen significant improvements with an increased scrollback of 10,000 lines, the export of all known LC_* variables, and the addition of a new cdt
function for easier directory navigation. Additionally, deprecated functions and various hacks have been removed to streamline the user experience.
Other enhancements include the replacement of the --fat16
option in the grml2usb
tool with --format
, the capability to collect ZFS information in JSON format within the grml-hwinfo
tool, and an increase in tmux.conf
‘s maximum status-right length. Two new packages, initramfs-tools-bin
and tio
, have also been added.
Grml 2025.08 is available for download in live ISO formats for both 64-bit x86 and 64-bit ARM architectures, accessible through the official Grml website. For further details, users can refer to the release notes.
