Devuan GNU+Linux 6.1 Launched: Now with Unofficial Raspberry Pi Images and a Systemd-Free Experience

The Devuan development team has announced the release of Devuan GNU+Linux 6.1, an update to their systemd-free distribution derived from Debian. This point release enhances the installation process for speech-synthesis packages and addresses a couple of bugs in the SLiM login manager.

Devuan 6.1 builds on Debian 13.2 “Trixie” and is primarily a minor upgrade. One noteworthy addition is the availability of unofficial Raspberry Pi images for models including Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, and 5, as outlined in the release notes.

This latest version adopts the Linux kernel 6.12.57 LTS as its default kernel, improving upon its predecessor, Devuan 6.0 “Excalibur,” released in early November 2025. The 6.0 version was noted for having a merged /usr file system and enhanced support for features like the PipeWire media server, though it dropped support for the i386 architecture.

Devuan GNU+Linux 6.1 is available for various architectures including i386, amd64, armel, armhf, arm64, ppc64el, and riscv64. Users can download the installation, live, netboot, and Docker images from the official website. Current Devuan users can update their systems with the command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

For a desktop experience, the live ISO comes with the latest Xfce 4.20 environment. For those wishing to install different desktop environments, netinstall or desktop ISOs are available.
