Today, Canonical announced the launch of Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole), marking it as the latest stable iteration of their widely-used GNU/Linux distribution, equipped with up-to-date elements and new functionalities.
Harnessing the power of the latest Linux 6.11 kernel series, Ubuntu 24.10 showcases the state-of-the-art GNOME 47 desktop environment tailored for the Ubuntu Desktop flavor, along with additional patches for Mutter and GNOME Shell aimed at enhancing both stability and performance. Furthermore, the Ubuntu Dock now allows visualization of Snap refreshes and improved management for Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) installed through the Chromium Snap.
A standout feature in Ubuntu 24.10 is the introduction of a new Security Center application that enables users to easily toggle the experimental permissions prompting feature for managing Home directory permissions. Additionally, this version promises an enhanced and optimized Power Profiles Manager, which is designed to support newer hardware functionalities better, particularly for AMD processors.
For users with NVIDIA hardware, the Ubuntu 24.10 release defaults to Wayland rather than Xorg on systems equipped with NVIDIA GPUs. Other noteworthy updates in this release include improvements in fingerprint device support and enhancements to the App Center, particularly on the Manage page, along with the ability to install third-party DEBs.
At its core, Ubuntu 24.10 is powered by an enhanced toolchain featuring GCC 14.2, GNU Binutils 2.43.1, GNU C Library 2.40, LLVM 19, Rust 1.80, Go 1.23, OpenSSL 3.3, systemd 256.5, Netplan 1.1, and .NET 8. In addition, the installer for Ubuntu Desktop has been revised to facilitate local file paths for autoinstall imports.

This release is available in various formats: Ubuntu Desktop, Server, and Cloud editions, along with the official flavors including Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, and Ubuntu MATE.
Keep in mind that Ubuntu 24.10 will only receive support for nine months, expiring in July 2025. For those seeking a long-term solution, it is advisable to download and install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), which will be supported through at least 2029.
