Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has introduced a new feature that simplifies the process of enabling Ubuntu Pro, Canonical’s subscription service that provides extended security updates for additional packages. This new step is integrated into the OS’s Welcome tool, which appears for users the first time they log in after installation.
The Welcome tool, known for guiding users through post-install tweaks such as enabling location services and sharing telemetry data with developers, now also includes an option to enroll in Ubuntu Pro. Users can select ‘Enable Ubuntu Pro’ or choose to ‘Skip for now’ to activate this feature later through the desktop’s Security Center app.
If users opt to enable Ubuntu Pro during setup, they will be presented with straightforward options to proceed. However, the information could be clearer, as new users may not be familiar with Ubuntu One accounts or the benefits that come with Ubuntu Pro. Adding a brief explanation of these aspects would enhance the experience for first-time users.
Once users decide to enable Ubuntu Pro, a unique code is generated, which they can easily copy and paste into the ubuntu.com/pro/attach webpage, or use a direct link provided to navigate to the appropriate site. An alternative option for manual token entry is also available for those who prefer not to use the automatic method.
