elementary OS 8 “Circe” Officially Launched: A New Era Based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

The elementary OS team has officially launched elementary OS 8, codenamed "Circe," which is now available based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat). This new release introduces several enhancements to the modern Pantheon desktop environment.

Among the key features are a brand new dock designed for efficient multitasking and improved window management. The OS now uses PipeWire as the default media server and includes a Secure Session mode that enhances user privacy by requiring app permissions for system features. This Secure Session, based on Wayland, also improves multimonitor support with Mixed DPI modes and better multi-touch gesture support.

The update enhances user experience with the addition of new FreeDesktop.org portals. These include tools such as Color Picker and Screenshot, along with expanded runtime permissions management for Flatpak applications. The AppCenter, the platform’s default app store, has also been revamped. It now features a “Made for elementary OS” badge for curated apps and new links that connect users directly to app developers and source code.

In the administrative backend, elementary OS 8 has transitioned driver management and system updates to the System Settings application, allowing for automatic update downloads and new options to install updates before shutdown. Additionally, improvements to keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and a redesigned System Settings interface contribute to a more streamlined user experience.

Users can now download elementary OS 8 as a live ISO image from the official website. Notably, while there is currently no automated upgrade pathway from previous major versions, personal data can be retained during reinstallation.
