The Floating Mini Panel GNOME Shell extension has received an update that introduces a vertical orientation option for the panel. This feature allows users to reposition the compact widget, which transforms GNOME’s top bar into a floating element that can hover above windows on the desktop.
This extension replaces the traditional horizontal layout with a more streamlined vertical setup, catering to user requests for a change. It continues to maintain functionality by allowing access to notifications and the Quick Menu while offering a less intrusive design.
Earlier updates had already enhanced the extension with auto-positioning and a dynamic corner radius functionality. The introduction of the vertical panel allows for a space-efficient setup, especially beneficial for modern widescreen monitors, giving applications and content a bit more height.
If you’re interested in trying it out, the Floating Mini Panel can be installed from the GNOME Extensions website. It’s compatible with GNOME versions 46 through 49, making it suitable for users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later. Existing users with the extension will receive the update automatically upon their next log out.
You can get the Floating Mini Panel from GNOME Extensions.
