The Linux Mint team shared their latest newsletter today, indicating their work on a Night Light feature for the Cinnamon desktop, along with enhanced support for Framework laptops right out of the box.
Linux Mint 22.1 is currently under development, with a planned release this December. It will feature the upcoming Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which includes a brand-new theme and a Night Light feature aimed at minimizing eyestrain during late-night computing sessions.
This new Night Light functionality will replace the Redshift solution utilized in older Linux Mint versions and will be fully integrated into the settings. Moreover, it will be compatible with both Wayland and X11 sessions, as Linux Mint continues its efforts to make Wayland the default in upcoming updates.
In addition to the revamped default Cinnamon theme in Linux Mint 22.1, the team will also present a “Force Quit” dialog, redesigned using Clutter, which will activate when an application becomes unresponsive. Other enhancements include modernized media buttons, updates to Workspace OSDs, a new status applet, and overall improvements to notifications, animations, and the main menu.
Additionally, the Linux Mint team announced a collaboration with Framework to ensure that future Linux Mint versions will seamlessly operate on their customizable laptops. Currently, both teams are concentrating on the flagship Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint specifically for the Framework Laptop 13.
“Achieving complete compatibility with Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop is a priority for them. This is crucial for us as it allows us to recommend this brand to our community without concerns regarding compatibility,” remarked Clement Lefebvre, the project leader for Linux Mint.
As we approach the Christmas season, Linux Mint 22.1 is set to introduce a significantly enhanced package management system. Similar to the Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” release, the forthcoming version will be powered by the Linux kernel 6.8 and will be based on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat).
