Firefox 142 Has Arrived: Discover the Latest Features and Enhancements!

After a month of beta testing, Firefox 142 is now available for download, ahead of its official release set for August 19th, 2025. This version introduces several noteworthy features aimed at boosting user experience and enhancing privacy.

One of the standout updates is the addition of a flexible exception list in the Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict mode. This feature allows users to prioritize compatibility with certain websites while maintaining essential privacy protections. The exceptions are categorized into two types: baseline for core functionality and convenience for extra features.

Firefox 142 also includes a convenient way for users to manage their extensions. Users can now remove extensions directly from the sidebar by right-clicking the extension icon and selecting "Remove from Sidebar." Additionally, improvements have been made in areas such as scrolling speed within the Bookmarks dialog, which now confines scroll actions to the component area, and enhanced drag-and-drop support for blob images.

Other enhancements focus on the search functionality from the address bar, streamlining the results to minimize duplicates, and improving the Netmonitor’s capabilities to display request headers, cookies, and parameters even if the request isn’t fully completed.

For web developers, Firefox 142 expands toolsets with new APIs. It introduces the wllama API for integrating local language model capabilities into extensions, and the URLPattern API for standardized URL matching and parsing. Moreover, the Prioritized Task Scheduling API allows developers to easily assign and manage task priorities, while the Selection.getComposedRanges() API enhances text selection accuracy across shadow DOM boundaries. The Debugger has also received an update that enables developers to toggle the visibility of the debugger overlay during script execution.

Mozilla plans to unveil Firefox 142 officially alongside the Firefox 140.2 ESR and Firefox 128.14 ESR releases. In the meantime, users can access the source tarball and binaries for various system architectures from Mozilla’s FTP server.
