GCompris has officially launched version 25.0 of its open-source educational suite, marking a significant update for this versatile cross-platform application designed for children aged 2 to 10. This release introduces five new activities and also implements a modernization of its software with the migration to Qt 6 and a new versioning scheme based on the release year.
Among the notable new activities is “Sketch,” which encourages children to express themselves through drawing with various tools, promoting creativity. Another new addition, “Calculate with ten’s complement,” builds upon existing capabilities to help kids understand number manipulation for summation purposes.
The suite also features new educational exercises like “Vertical addition” and “Vertical subtraction,” which teach addition and subtraction techniques through clear, structured methods. These activities aim to simplify complex mathematical concepts, making them more engaging for young learners.
In addition to the new activities, GCompris 25.0 includes various improvements, such as bug fixes and visual enhancements across multiple activities. The descriptions of activities have been made clearer with input from educators. Users can also now switch languages in the menu without needing to restart the application, which additionally includes a new Sanskrit translation along with updates in various other languages.
This milestone release is celebrated as part of commemorating 25 years of GCompris, according to developers’ announcement.
GCompris 25.0 is available for download on its official website and can also be installed on GNU/Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, macOS, and Windows. Users can find the suite in the Google Play store, F-Droid, the Windows Store, or from the Flathub repository for Flatpak installations.
