GIMP 3.2 Released: Introducing Link Layers, Enhanced SVG Export, and Improved Painting Experience!

The stable version of GIMP 3.2 has been released, bringing significant updates and features to users across all major desktop operating systems, including Linux. This release comes a year after GIMP 3.0 and marks the beginning of a new streamlined release process for the software.

Among the most noteworthy features introduced in GIMP 3.2 are Link Layers, which function similarly to Adobe Photoshop’s Smart Objects. This feature allows users to manipulate layers non-destructively, meaning you can scale or rotate a Link Layer without altering the original image. Additionally, changes made to the source image will automatically update in the project, making for a more efficient workflow.

Another enhancement is the vector layer creation capability through the Path tool. Users can easily create vector layers, adjusting stroke, fill settings, and properties with ease. Moreover, these vector layers are flexible and can be transformed non-destructively, supporting dynamic adjustments without degrading quality.

GIMP 3.2 also includes improvements to the user interface and tools, notably an updated MyPaint brush tool with 20 new presets and features for more precise control over canvas zoom and rotation. The text editing functionality has been enhanced, allowing for repositioning of text boxes and keyboard shortcut support for text formatting.

Additional changes in this release consist of improved PSD import capabilities, support for importing Photoshop pattern files, and the ability to export in various formats such as JPEG 2000, SVG, and PDF. The welcome dialog has been removed for a more seamless opening experience, and there are minor adjustments that improve overall usability and accessibility.

To install GIMP 3.2 on Ubuntu, users can download it from the official downloads page or opt for the GIMP snap package for the latest version. There are also Flatpak and AppImage options available, along with various community-maintained PPAs.
