Grml, a live bootable Linux distribution designed for system administrators and users of text tools, has officially announced the release of version 2025.12. This version is based on the Debian Testing/Forky repositories as of December 11, 2025, and is powered by the Linux kernel 6.17.
The new release brings updates to the grml-live build system, enhancing its capability to create Grml-based live systems. It introduces a new TOR class and adds support for the grml-desktop package while establishing Debian Bookworm as the minimum host operating system.
Grml 2025.12 also includes significant updates to its console scripts, removing support for several old scripts such as grepc, grepedit, and logview. The Zsh configuration, grml-zshrc, has been updated to allow syncing of global aliases from zshrc.local.
Additionally, the release introduces three new packages: firmware-mediatek, gosop (a dependency for devscripts), and ImageMagick, which acts as a replacement for GraphicsMagick. In total, eleven Debian packages have been removed or replaced.
Among the other notable changes, support for GRUB 0.x and early versions of syslinux has been eliminated from the grml2usb tool. The grml-hwinfo utility now collects information from UPower, and several bugs reported in the issue tracker have been fixed.
