HandBrake, the well-known open-source video transcoder, has released its first significant version of 2026, updating to 1.11.0. This release introduces new professional encoding capabilities, featuring support for DNxHR and ProRes encoders. These encoders offer a variety of presets suited for different production needs, maintaining resolutions up to 4K and enabling output in a MOV container.
The ProRes codec is recognized for its utility in the broadcast industry, commonly used for final delivery formats in commercials, films, and streaming content. This newest version allows HandBrake to utilize FFmpeg’s ProRes encoder, enhancing its functionality for content creators.
In addition to the new encoders, HandBrake 1.11.0 has integrated an AMD VCN AV1 10-bit encoder for 4K video output, compatible with the AMD 9000 series GPUs and newer. Users with older 7000 series AMD GPUs can still use the encoder, though they may encounter limitations in output dimensions due to hardware constraints.
For archival purposes, the update extends the Preservation FFV1 presets, which are employed by various institutions, such as the Library of Congress, for digitizing video collections. This includes new FLAC and PCM audio preset variants, allowing better options for lossless audio storage. Additionally, FFV1 can now also be wrapped in MP4 containers alongside the traditional Matroska format.
Several enhancements for Linux users are also included in this release. If HandBrake is run as a Flatpak, opening a transcoded file will now properly hand off to default applications without issues. The new version improves user experience with updated interface elements, such as buttons for previewing frames and options to change the application language independently of the system settings.
To install HandBrake 1.11.0 on Ubuntu, users can conveniently download it from Flathub or the official HandBrake website. It is recommended to avoid unofficial versions that may not be up-to-date.
