Memerist is a new meme generator designed specifically for Linux users, recently released on Flathub. This GTK4/libadwaita application serves as a native image editor with a simple focus—creating and sharing memes quickly and efficiently.
While primarily intended as a meme generator, Memerist can open any image file, allowing users to add text and simple effects. It comes pre-loaded with several meme templates, but users can also import their own. The app provides flexibility by allowing text content, font, size, and opacity adjustments, and offers an on-canvas preview to ensure the text is placed perfectly. Users can drag layers for repositioning, although image overlays cannot be resized once imported. Other functionalities include cropping, basic image filters, and global adjustments for opacity and blend modes.
Unlike many online meme generators that have moved towards AI tools, Memerist retains a straightforward, offline method, circumventing issues like watermarks and privacy concerns with personal images. While tools like GIMP and Pinta could also create memes, Memerist fills a niche by providing dedicated functionalities that simplify the process.
As open-source software, Memerist is available for free on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions via Flathub, with the source code accessible on GitHub. The app has recently seen updates, hitting version 0.4.2, an improvement over its previous alpha version.
For those interested in trying out Memerist, it can be downloaded directly from Flathub.
