Introducing ONLYOFFICE 8: Now with PDF Encryption and RTL Support

Lots of new features, er feature in the latest update to ONLYOFFICE, the open-source productivity suite for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

ONLYOFFICE 8.0 introduces RTL support, albeit as an opt-in, beta feature. When enabled it enables RTL text in the UI and support for bidirectional text input in text documents and presentations — though devs stress it’s partial support with known limitations.

Plenty of PDF improvements are provided in this update. This version makes it possible to encrypt regular PDFs with passwords to prevent unauthorised access, and create fillable PDF forms (which can’t encrypted) from editable DOCXF templates.

The Presentation app now permits you to define the final color for animations that morph in color. Also, the icons of animation effects turn inactive when the effect is incompatible with a particular object.

For those making use of the ONLYOFFICE spreadsheet editor, you’ll appreciate the substantial improvements: inclusion of a new “goal seek” feature under the data tab; a chart wizard that suggests possible chart types grounded on selected data; and a series feature for generating number sequences.

Attentive Linux users will observe that the window control buttons have shed much of their Windows-y appearance. While they do not natively adopt the underlying DE style, they harmonize better with the generic Linux styling.

Finally, ONLYOFFICE 8.0 makes a major accessibility buff by adding a setting to enable support for screen readers; refreshes the branding used throughout the various editor apps; and resolves a clutch of dry-sounding security issues.

ONLYOFFICE is a free and open-source software that functions on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Moreover, this suite comes with a web-based edition known as ONLYOFFICE Docs. However, the offline desktop editors work flawlessly and do not require any form of signup.

You can download ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors from the official website or GitHub project page as a DEB package suitable for Ubuntu. Snap, Flatpak, or AppImage versions of ONLYOFFICE? Thankfully, these are available too!

Searching for a LibreOffice alternative that is also a free and open-source software? ONLYOFFICE suite should certainly interest you. With its fully-featured, user-friendly capabilities, and regular updates, this office suite’s popularity continues to surge.
