Proton, the Swiss-based company renowned for its VPN and email services, has unveiled Proton Pass for Linux and macOS users.
This expansion brings Proton’s secure password management tool to all major desktop platforms, complementing existing mobile app support for Android and iOS. Additionally, Proton Pass web extensions for browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are now available.
The recently released Proon Pass Linux application is compatible with all Debian and Red Hat-based Linux distros, including Ubuntu.
Proton indicates that an impending update for the Proton Pass Linux application will “integrate with the system’s authentication mechanisms and APIs.” This enhancement means that unlocking Pass could be done through your Linux user account, fingerprint reader, or a module that supports Linux PAM—a convenient feature.
One issue some might notice, similar to the Proton Mail Linux app launched in March, is that the new open-source Proton Pass Linux app utilizes Electron.
What is Proteon Pass?
Proton Pass represents an encrypted password manager featuring built-in 2-factor authentication, support for passkeys, password sharing capabilities, and an innovative email masking tool aimed at guarding your privacy and reducing spam.
The application includes conventional password management functionalities such as password generation, password strength assessment, and editing of stored passwords. Additionally, it facilitates the import of passwords from other management systems like Bitwarden, 1Password, and KeePass.
While the free version of Proton Pass allows for unlimited password synchronization across all supported devices and platforms, as well as the ability to create vaults and email aliases, there is a cap on the number of email aliases you can have.
Subscribing to the paid plan at $23.88 per year provides unlimited creation of vaults and aliases, and includes access to a built-in 2FA feature, plus Proton Monitor, a service that monitors the dark web for data leaks and notifies you if your information is compromised.
Download Proton Pass for Linux
You can download Proton Pass for Ubuntu from the Proton website as a DEB file.
If you’re using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, note that DEBs cannot be installed via App Center. You should either utilize apt
via the command line or use the Gdebi tool for installation purposes.
