Offensive Security has officially launched Kali Linux 2025.1, marking the first update of this Debian-based distribution for ethical hacking and penetration testing in the year 2025. This release comes three months after Kali Linux 2024.4 and introduces a refreshed theme, updating the boot menu, login screen, and desktop wallpapers. Notably, it is the first version to offer the modern Xfce 4.20 desktop environment.
Additionally, Kali Linux 2025.1 brings an updated KDE Plasma desktop environment to version KDE Plasma 6.2. Users can benefit from numerous new keyboard shortcuts designed to facilitate quicker navigation. An important enhancement for Raspberry Pi users is a major kernel update along with a new partition layout and advanced boot firmware from Raspberry Pi OS.
For Raspberry Pi devices, Kali Linux 2025.1a is substantial enough that users are recommended to start fresh, rather than updating their existing setups. The release notes specify that although users won’t experience issues if they stick with the 5.15 kernel, starting with a new image is preferred.
One of the exciting new features is a tool named Hoaxshell, which acts as a payload generator and handler for Windows reverse shells, leveraging the HTTP(S) protocol to create a reverse shell connection. Updates extend to Kali NetHunter as well, including new kernels for specific smartphone models.
Kali Linux 2025.1a is now available for download in various forms, including support for 64-bit, ARM, virtual machines, cloud environments, WSL, and mobile platforms. Those already using Kali Linux can update their systems easily via terminal commands: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
.
