KaOS Linux 2024.07 Released: Featuring KDE Plasma 6.1 and Linux Kernel 6.9

The development team behind the independent KaOS Linux distribution announced today the release and general availability of the KaOS Linux 2024.07 ISO snapshot for July 2024.

KaOS Linux 2024.07 arrives about two months after the KaOS Linux 2024.05 release and features the latest and greatest KDE Plasma 6.1 desktop environment series, marking a substantial update from the KDE Plasma 6.0 series.

The KDE Plasma 6.1.3 point release is the default for this release, accompanied by the latest KDE Gear 24.05.2 and KDE Frameworks 6.4 software suites, all compiled against the Qt 6.7.2 application framework.

Under the hood, the KaOS Linux 2024.07 release is powered by the Linux 6.9 kernel series, specifically by Linux kernel 6.9.9, and comes with an updated toolchain consisting of the Mesa 24.1.4 graphics stack, LLVM/Clang 18.1.8 compiler, systemd 253.22 init system, PipeWire 1.2.1 multimedia server, as well as libgcrypt 1.11.0, Nettle 3.10, Dracut 103, OpenSSL 3.3, OpenCV 4.10.0, and OpenSSH 98.p1.

The bcachefs file system support implemented in the previous release is still in an experimental stage. Users can try it out by installing KaOS Linux with the Calamares graphical installer in manual partitioning mode. However, the KaOS devs note the fact that no specific settings have been implemented for this filesystem yet.

KaOS Linux 2024.07 is available for download right now from the official website for new installations. Existing KaOS Linux users need only to perform a system update by running the sudo pacman -Syu command in a terminal emulator app as KaOS Linux follows a rolling-release model in the style of Arch Linux.
