KaOS Linux 2025.09 Released: Featuring Linux 6.16 and KDE Gear 25.08

KaOS Linux has introduced version 2025.09, enhancing its offerings as an independent Linux distribution that utilizes the Arch Linux ecosystem. This release features the latest Linux kernel 6.16, and introduces the KDE Plasma 6.4.5 desktop environment, along with KDE Gear 25.08.1 and KDE Frameworks 6.18. All components were built using the updated Qt 6.9.2 application framework.

The new version comes with several exciting applications, including Typst, a markup-based typesetting system; Plasma Bigscreen, designed for TVs; and Hydrogen, a drum sequencer.

Notably, KaOS has moved the source code of its community packages (KCP) to Codeberg, leaving behind closed-source Git repositories. This aligns with a broader commitment to open-source principles. Additionally, the Calamares installer has been updated to eliminate the need for a web browser in the Welcome page for accessing extra information, using instead a QML Drawer for better security.

Under the hood, this update brings various core component upgrades, including Mesa 25.2.3, PipeWire 1.4.8, systemd 254.27, and GNU Bash 5.3, among others.
