The development team responsible for the KDE neon rolling release distribution announced the launch of KDE neon 6.2, now based on the newest Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) series of operating systems.
KDE neon is built on a long-term supported Ubuntu release and features the latest KDE software alongside the Plasma desktop environment. This distribution employs a rolling release model, allowing users to avoid the need to download new ISO images or reinstall their systems.
Every two years, the KDE neon developers rebase their distribution on the latest Ubuntu LTS series. This week, KDE neon has been successfully rebased on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), which brings not only the latest security patches and software updates but also includes a more recent kernel for enhanced hardware support.
“We have just switched on the upgrade for KDE neon to rebase on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS,” stated the developers. “We do this every two years, and the 22.04 LTS base was becoming increasingly outdated, with old Pipewire causing several issues and packages like Krita not compiling at all.”
Users of KDE neon can expect to receive a pop-up notification on their screens in the upcoming days, prompting them to upgrade to KDE neon 6.2, which is built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. However, it is crucial to ensure that you have a backup of your essential files before proceeding with the upgrade on your KDE neon machines.
If you do not receive a notification or wish to accelerate the upgrade process, you can manually update your KDE neon installations by referring to the Noble Upgrade instructions that are made available by the KDE neon team.
Additionally, there is a new ISO release of KDE neon 6.2 for those looking to install the Ubuntu-based distribution on new hardware or to reinstall existing systems. For those curious, the latest KDE neon ISO includes the newly launched KDE Plasma 6.2 desktop environment by default.
