If you’re a Kubuntu 25.04 user, you can now access the latest KDE Plasma 6.3.5 update through the Kubuntu backports PPA, which was recently announced by Kubuntu developers. This release serves as the final bug-fix before the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.4.
The update includes several noteworthy fixes. For example, the Discover app store has improved its "Still Looking" indicator, allowing users to know when it is searching for updates, rather than assuming it has crashed. Additionally, the Print Manager can now set a default printer when adding a new device, streamlining the setup process.
Users of the Notes applet will find that stick notes no longer have size constraints when changing display resolutions. Meanwhile, the Weather widget has been updated to respect the default units, eliminating issues with mixed temperature scales.
Further, the Calendar applet now displays event indicators above the main labels when alternative calendars or holidays are activated, enhancing visibility. A notifications fix has resolved issues with alerts from various applications stacking or appearing incorrectly.
KWin, the window manager for KDE Plasma, has also received a number of enhancements, including improvements to variable refresh rate scheduling, HDR brightness settings, and fixes to prevent crashes from texture allocations. Other notable changes resolve issues with task dialogues appearing upside down in vertical panel layouts.
To upgrade to Plasma 6.3.5, Kubuntu users should add the Kubuntu backports PPA to their software sources. This can easily be done via the command line:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
After that, run an upgrade with:
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
When enabling the PPA, be aware that it may introduce newer versions of other packages in the future. To avoid unwanted upgrades, consider disabling the PPA after installing.
For any major bugs that might arise from using the PPA, users are encouraged to file reports directly against the PPA packages on Launchpad. For more details about the changes in KDE Plasma 6.3.5, you can refer to the KDE’s complete changelog.
