KDE Plasma is set to introduce an automatic day/night theme switching feature in its upcoming version, fulfilling a long-standing request that dates back to 2019. This new setting allows users to automatically switch their Global Theme based on the time of day—light themes during the day and dark themes at night. Additionally, users can customize the switching times according to their preferences.
The feature, as explained by KDE developer Nate Graham, includes the ability to select two Global Themes, enabling automatic changes that align with the Night Light settings.
Previously, users have depended on scripts and third-party applications to manage similar functionality. The integration of this feature directly into Plasma means users won’t have to search for external solutions; it will work seamlessly. This new option will also be easily accessible through the System Settings > Quick Settings page, which will help users select their preferred Global Themes, including non-default ones.
Moreover, the KDE Plasma 6.5 release will address another common concern regarding wallpaper changes with dark mode settings. Users will now have the option to choose a preferred wallpaper variant that remains consistent, regardless of their color scheme settings.
These enhancements aim to cater to users transitioning from other operating systems like Windows or macOS, ensuring a more familiar and comfortable experience within the KDE environment.
