The latest update of LibreOffice, version 25.8.1, introduces nearly 100 bug fixes to enhance the functionality of this open-source office suite. Released earlier than expected, this update specifically addresses several critical issues related to Microsoft Office document formats such as DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX.
Users of the previous version encountered problems when opening and editing these formats. Issues included distorted charts in XLS files within Calc, failure to recognize cell names in XLSB files, and incomplete display of sheets in modified XLSX files. Additionally, Writer had problems where text justification for DOCX files using Times New Roman was incorrect, floating tables didn’t position correctly, and there were wrapping errors with images or shapes.
Among other fixes, a crash that could occur when navigating the NoteBookBar interface was also resolved. This update aims to provide a smoother experience while handling Microsoft formats, which are known for their proprietary nature and compatibility challenges.
To aid users in transitioning from proprietary formats, The Document Foundation has issued an ODF migration guide. This guide aims to clarify the advantages of using open document formats as opposed to those that tend to lock users into Microsoft products.
Since its release two weeks ago, LibreOffice 25.8 has seen over 640,000 downloads, indicating a strong demand for free alternatives to Microsoft Office.
Users can download LibreOffice 25.8.1 for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the official website. For Ubuntu users, the appropriate DEB bundles are available, along with options through the Snap Store and Flathub. The update will automatically roll out for users who installed from these platforms.
