New Libreboot Update: Open-Source Firmware Now Compatible with HP EliteBook 820 G2 Laptops

The Libreboot open-source and free BIOS/UEFI firmware developers have introduced support for another laptop model, namely, the HP EliteBook 820 G2. You can even order this model with Libreboot pre-installed.

If you’re a fan of open-source BIOS/UEFI firmware, Libreboot is an excellent choice. Their most recent addition incorporates support for new mainboards for laptops and desktops. The list includes HP EliteBook 2570p, HP 8300 USDT, and Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L.

This week, a new patch was launched to incorporate support for HP EliteBook 820 G2 laptops, as highlighted by developer Leah Rowe. The HP EliteBook 820 G2 is a 12.5-inch Broadwell laptop, which can be powered by either Intel Core i5-5200U, Intel Core i5-5300U, Intel Core i7-5500U, or Intel Core i7-5600U processors.

Some of its features include three USB 3.0 ports, a 4K 60Hz capable DisplayPort, a VGA port, RAM capacity up to 32GB, three storage slots which support PCIe, M.2, and regular SATA drives, a side dock connector for docking station usage, and an eDP type screen that can be upgraded to Full HD (1920×1080) resolution.

You can purchase the HP EliteBook 820 G2 laptop pre-installed with the Libreboot open-source firmware if self-installation isn’t feasible or desired for you. By doing this, you’re also supporting the developers of Libreboot, as one of the developers owns the company selling these Libreboot pre-installed HP EliteBook 820 G2 laptops.

If you’re already an owner of the HP EliteBook 820 G2 laptop and wish to install Libreboot on your own, please head over to the HP 820 G2 hardware/install guide for additional information.
