New Release Alert: HandBrake 1.8.2 Enhances Performance with FFmpeg 7.0.2 Support and Critical Bug Fixes

HandBrake 1.8.2 has been released today for this powerful and popular open-source, cross-platform, and free video transcoder/converter for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows systems.

HandBrake 1.8.2 is the second maintenance update to the latest HandBrake 1.8 stable series fixing various bugs like an issue where an encoded file could be outputted with the wrong filename when using the queue on Linux systems.

For all supported platforms, this release also fixes a potential crash that occurred when trying to scan deleted files, an issue that could cause some audio tracks to be dropped, and scanning of broken video clips that use reserved color matrix values.

Only for Windows systems, HandBrake 1.8.2 fixes an issue where the auto name wasn’t triggering correctly with preset changes, a potential crash when importing presets from the macOS version, an issue when loading presets where a video encode isn’t available on the system, and a minor startup performance issue on some Intel-based systems.

HandBrake 1.8.2 enhances its capabilities by integrating the latest FFmpeg 7.0.2 for advanced video decoding and filtering, libvpx 1.14.1 for encoding VP8 and VP9 video codecs, and libass 0.17.3 to better handle subtitles.

This version follows just one and a half months after the release of HandBrake 1.8.1. The previous version addressed several issues including a warning/error related to repeat headers with the x265 encoder, a bug where the NVEnc encoder would not recognize the level setting, corrupted DVD subtitles rendering, and visual artifacts when employing the eedi2 filter.

Furthermore, HandBrake 1.8.1 resolved a freezing issue in the queue on macOS, which could occur if the encoding process crashed during job configuration. Windows users saw fixes for problems like unintended hardware decoding during previews, overly sensitive auto-naming functionality, and the disabling of hardware decoding for new installations.

Check out the release notes on the project’s GitHub page for more details. You can download HandBrake 1.8.2 as a Flatpak app from the same location if you want to install it on your favorite GNU/Linux distribution if you have the Flatpak runtime pre-installed.
