The NordVPN Linux application recently enhanced its functionality by introducing a graphical user interface (GUI). To further improve user experience and transparency, the company has now made this GUI open-source. The open-source code is hosted on GitHub, where users can find build instructions and contribution guidelines.
Since the addition of the GUI, NordVPN has reported a significant increase—over 70%—in daily usage among Linux devices. This change is viewed as a way to maintain momentum and strengthen the connection with the Linux community. Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s chief technology officer, emphasized that the open-source approach aligns with the principles of Linux, promoting openness and collaboration. He stated that this move allows for greater transparency, accessibility, and user confidence in the application.
Alongside the GUI open-sourcing, the official NordVPN Snap package has also received an update that introduces the GUI alongside a new information screen. This screen provides users with essential Snap commands for proper setup, ensuring a smoother experience with the sandboxed package.
To install the NordVPN Snap on Ubuntu, users can either find it in the App Center or execute the following terminal command:
sudo snap install nordvpn
While using NordVPN requires an account and a paid plan, the service is noted for its commitment to privacy, especially when compared to many free alternatives that may compromise user data.
