The openSUSE project has announced the release of openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1, enhancing its previous version by focusing on security and streamlined upgrades. This latest release includes notable features such as soft-reboot support and added two-factor authentication (TOTP) capability for PAM logins.
openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 is launched just two months after version 6.0 and aims to maintain alignment with the upstream SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro releases. This enhances its functionality for containerized and virtualized workloads.
Key features of this update include the introduction of the opensuse-migration-tool
package, designed to facilitate easier upgrades between different openSUSE Leap Micro versions. Furthermore, users will now find that password-based remote root logins are disabled by default, increasing system security. Additional improvements consist of tools like vhostmd
for SAP virtualization, optimizations to the jeos-firstboot
wizard, and support for ZRAM.
For installation, openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 can be downloaded in several formats, including Self-install and Fully Encrypted Disk Images, catering to both 64-bit and AArch64 systems. The project encourages users to utilize the Self-install image for USB-based setups since traditional installers are no longer supported. It also urges those still using the now designated end-of-life openSUSE Leap Micro 5.5 to upgrade to version 6.0 or 6.1 to ensure continued support and updates.
openSUSE Leap Micro serves as a community edition of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro OS, incorporating the robust security features of its enterprise counterpart.
