Organize Your GNOME Shell: How App Grid Wizard Simplifies Shortcut Management with Folders

The GNOME Shell application picker, commonly referred to as the app grid, is already effective in its default form, allowing users to rearrange apps and create custom folders. However, some users seek more organized solutions. Over the years, various tweaks and extensions for the app grid have emerged, from arranging app shortcuts alphabetically to restoring pinned shortcuts.

A new GNOME Shell extension called App Grid Wizard has arrived, aimed at users who prefer an organized and tidy app grid. This extension automatically groups app shortcuts into folders based on the software’s assigned categories. The folders include:

  • Accessories
  • Games
  • Graphics
  • Internet
  • Office
  • Programming
  • Science
  • Sound & Video
  • System Tools
  • Universal Access
  • Wine
  • Waydroid

After installation and activation, App Grid Wizard also monitors new app installations, ensuring that their shortcuts are placed in the appropriate folders. This feature saves time for users who wish to maintain an organized app grid without the hassle of manually sorting apps.

Users might generally prefer launching apps via the GNOME Shell overview search or through the Ubuntu Dock for frequently used applications. However, the App Grid Wizard extension is specifically designed for those who prefer all their software neatly categorized, similar to traditional app menus.

Key features of the extension include:

  • Automatic organization of apps into folders based on category
  • Continuous monitoring of app installations to maintain organization
  • Easily enable or disable the extension through the Quick Settings menu
  • Minimal impact on system performance

It’s important to note that if you have already created custom app folders, they will be removed upon enabling this extension, and will not be restored if you later disable it.

App Grid Wizard is free and open-source software that is compatible with GNOME versions 45 through 48.
