Good news for fans of the original Pebble smartwatches! Google has open-sourced the PebbleOS, the operating system that powered these iconic devices. The decision follows Google’s acquisition of Pebble’s assets through the Fitbit buyout in 2021, later realizing that the community’s interest in the Pebble brand persists.
The open-sourcing of PebbleOS allows developers and enthusiasts alike to build upon and create new smartwatches, even if some proprietary elements like the Bluetooth stack and heart-rate sensor driver have been removed. This initiative was encouraged by Pebble’s founder, Eric Migicovsky, who believed that making the OS available legally would serve as a solid foundation for reviving the Pebble brand.
Originally launched via a Kickstarter campaign in 2012, Pebble became a pioneer in the smartwatch space with its simple design, long battery life, and active community that developed apps and watch faces. Unfortunately, following investment challenges, Pebble’s production and support were ceased after its acquisition by Fitbit in 2016.
Despite this setback, the community around Pebble remained vibrant through platforms like Rebble.io, which continued to support the original devices. Now, with the open-sourced PebbleOS, Migicovsky is working on a new company aimed at creating a modern smartwatch reminiscent of the original Pebble, promising to include beloved features along with new enhancements.
This revival comes at a time when developing smartwatches has become more manageable, given the established market and availability of parts. Migicovsky’s new smartwatch is expected to maintain compatibility with existing Pebble apps and watch faces while incorporating modern functionalities.

The return of Pebble could reignite excitement in the smartwatch space, especially among users who cherished the original’s user-friendly, open-source spirit.
