Pinta 3.0 Released: New GTK4 Port and Exciting Effects in Open-Source Painting Software

Pinta 3.0 has officially been released, marking a significant upgrade to this open-source, cross-platform paint program developed with GTK#. The new version is compatible with GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms, and it comes with a range of new features following nearly a year of development.

The highlight of Pinta 3.0 is its port to the latest GTK4 and libadwaita technologies, which enhance the user interface and experience. Notable changes include the new "New Screenshot" option in the File menu that utilizes platform-specific tools for taking screenshots on Linux and macOS.

This version introduces various new effects such as Dithering, Voronoi Diagram, and Vignette among others. Users can now customize gradients in the Fractal and Clouds effects, and have greater control over the Tile Reflection effect’s tile type and edge behavior. Furthermore, the Twist effect has been upgraded to operate based on user selection rather than the entire image, improving usability.

Pinta 3.0 also features a new option in the View menu that allows users to toggle between dark and light color schemes. A revamped canvas grid replaces the old pixel grid, now offering customizable dimensions. Users can also expand or contract selections with the new Offset Selection function, and adjust brush sizes and line widths via keyboard shortcuts.

Other enhancements include a better color picker dialog, improved zooming behavior with trackpads (including pinch-to-zoom support), and the introduction of WebP image support for the Windows version. There is now an ARM64 installer for macOS and the minimum required .NET version has been upgraded to 8.0.

Moreover, various bugs have been addressed, and users can check the release notes for detailed information on changes. Pinta 3.0 can be downloaded as a source package from its GitHub page. It is also available as a Flatpak or Snap app from Flathub and the Snap Store.
