PorteuX 1.7 Release: Embrace the Power of Slackware with Linux 6.11 and GNOME 47.1

The release of PorteuX 1.7 marks a significant update for this portable Linux distribution, which is based on Slackware and takes inspiration from both Slax and Porteus distros. It is designed to be compact, efficient, portable, modular, and immutable.

PorteuX 1.7 is built on the latest Linux 6.11 kernel series, introducing substantial enhancements over the previous version 1.6 released in late August 2024. Notable changes include the addition of GNOME 47.1 and KDE Plasma 6.2.1 desktop environments. It also offers experimental build scripts for System76’s Rust-based COSMIC desktop and the anticipated Xfce 4.20 desktop environment.

The Xfce edition of PorteuX 1.7 adopts the stable Xfce 4.18 desktop environment as its default and includes numerous enhancements. These improvements address issues like a ‘sticky keys’ notification problem, the capability to display file sizes in binary, support for tiling windows by dragging them to the edge of the screen, a fix for invalid folder creation by extractors, and a new 10ms delay for showing or hiding the panel.

The PorteuX LXQt edition has also seen enhancements, including the removal of the blue frame in focused areas. Meanwhile, the LXDE edition fixed an error/freezing problem when dragging files from the Engrampa archive manager to the file manager’s side panel, and the GNOME and Cinnamon editions underwent various package updates.

PorteuX 1.7 introduces several enhancements under the hood. It improves the structure of folders used by builders across all desktop environments and updates multiple packages to be compiled using Clang, which includes the kernel. The build process experiences increased efficiency thanks to upgrades made to the makepkg command in the build scripts, which now avoids compression. Furthermore, it offers enhanced support for PipeWire, refines GCC/Clang flags to incorporate link time optimization (LTO), and optimizes the kernel configuration to minimize size while maintaining performance.

This version also features improvements to the xzm converter scripts, which now support an -o [path] option. Additionally, it relocates vte from 002-gui to the relevant desktop environments that utilize it, enhances stripping across all base modules, revises installation instructions, and eliminates several unnecessary packages and services. For further information on the updates and modifications introduced in PorteuX 1.7, consult the release notes.

PorteuX 1.7 is available for download now from the project’s GitHub page. You can find editions for KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, and LXDE, all based on both the Slackware Stable and Slackware Current distributions.
