PorteuX 2.3 Released: Embrace GNOME 49 and Enhanced Webcam Support on Slackware-Based Distribution

The latest release of the Slackware-based PorteuX 2.3 distribution has been unveiled, bringing significant updates and enhancements. PorteuX, which draws inspiration from Slax and Porteus, aims to provide a fast, compact, portable, modular, and immutable operating system environment.

This new version features the latest GNOME 49 desktop environment alongside the KDE Plasma 6.4.5 environment, NVIDIA driver version 580.82.09, and is based on the Linux kernel 6.16.7. PorteuX 2.3 allows users to enjoy GNOME 49, complete with a new terminal emulator called Ptyxis. In addition, it enhances the management of GNOME Shell extensions, enabling users to uninstall unnecessary extensions easily using the command removepkg [package].

Improved webcam support is another highlight of this release. The distribution also incorporates better packaging practices for in-house builds, with the _porteux keyword included in package names and improved stripping of NVIDIA’s graphics drivers.

New default packages like Fastfetch and GNU nano have been added, while several others, including outdated codecs and GPU drivers, have been removed. Multiple bug fixes have also been implemented, addressing issues with the Openbox window manager and keyboard shortcuts in GNOME.

Moreover, PorteuX 2.3 improves its build process via enhanced compiler flags for optimizing performance, making it quicker and more efficient.

For those interested in trying it out, PorteuX 2.3 is available for download with various desktop environments, such as KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, and LXDE.
