postmarketOS 25.06: Exciting Updates with New Device Support and systemd Integration

postmarketOS 25.06 has been officially released, marking an exciting update for this Linux-based mobile operating system. This version introduces support for several new devices, including the Google Pixel 3A XL, Motorola Moto G5 Plus, and various Xiaomi models such as the Mi 9T and POCO X3 NFC.

Built on top of Alpine Linux 3.22, postmarketOS 25.06 implements the systemd init system and includes graphical interfaces like GNOME 48, KDE Plasma Mobile 6.3.5, Phosh 0.47.0, and Sxmo 1.17.1. To streamline installation, a new os-installer UI has been integrated to enhance user experience when setting up postmarketOS from a computer.

This release also brings mobile-config-thunderbird, designed to transform Mozilla Thunderbird into a more mobile-friendly application. Initial camera support is added for various devices, including the OnePlus 6 and several Motorola and Xiaomi models. Additional improvements include audio and charging support for MSM89x7 devices.

Aside from device support, postmarketOS 25.06 enhances features with the updated mobile-config-firefox package, which now includes per-site user-agent spoofing, ensuring that websites default to their mobile versions. Noteworthy changes also involve the removal of the openssh-client package and the addition of new wallpapers, while device ports with downstream kernels have been split to streamline development efforts.

The developers mentioned that binary packages for devices fall into community and testing categories. They emphasize that downstream ports may not be as beneficial but encourage contributions to refine them.
