Raspberry Pi Introduces Affordable 1TB SSD: Priced at $70/£67

Raspberry Pi has introduced its latest product: a 1TB SSD, available for only $70/£67. This announcement is great news for enthusiasts looking for affordable storage solutions compatible with Raspberry Pi devices.

Historically known for its small single-board computers, Raspberry Pi has expanded its offerings to include a variety of peripherals, from keyboards to cameras and now storage solutions. Previous product launches included Raspberry Pi-branded SD cards designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 5, which provide reliable performance and native support for command queuing.

The new SSD joins a previously launched line of Raspberry Pi SSDs, available in 256GB and 512GB capacities. The M.2 2230 SSDs are PCIe Gen 3 compliant, and the new 1TB model boasts impressive read/write capabilities at 90k IOPS for both 4KB random reads and writes.

While these specs may not compete with more powerful alternatives like the Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus, the affordability and compatibility with Raspberry Pi systems make it a suitable choice for projects such as retro gaming centers or handling large media libraries. Raspberry Pi representative Ashley Whittaker noted that a terabyte of storage could accommodate approximately 250 HD movies, 200,000 songs, or even 20-30 AAA games.

To fully utilize the 1TB SSD with a Raspberry Pi 5, users will need to purchase an M.2 adapter HAT, available from various vendors at prices starting around $10.

The SSD is now available for purchase through approved Raspberry Pi resellers, providing a cost-effective solution for those seeking a significant storage boost for their Raspberry Pi setups.
