Linux Mint developers have conveyed a few details about the forthcoming major release, anticipated to arrive in the early summer.
The first revelation is the codename: the successor of Linux Mint 21, i.e., Linux Mint 22, will be named ‘Wilma’.
This wasn’t a complete shock; the codenames for all subsets of the Linux Mint 21.x series started with the character ‘V’, so it was expected that the next one would begin with ‘W’. There are numerous women’s names starting with W that Mint can choose from for its point releases, such as Wendy, Winona, Wanda, Winnie, and Winifred.
Further, as expected, Linux Mint 22 is constructed on the Ubuntu 24.04 framework. Although this base isn’t completely matured (it isn’t set for release until April), Mint will adopt, employ, and profit from many of its modifications. This will likely include the Linux 6.8 kernel as the default — not the Linux 6.6 LTS!
Finally, we have been given our first look at a brand new feature for the Cinnamon desktop: the ‘Nemo Actions Organiser’ app.
Nemo Actions are a new type of add-on introduced in Linux Mint 21.3. They allow users to add additional actions (I can’t think of a better term) to the right-click context menu in the Nemo file manager, e.g., “open folder in terminal”, “run checksum on ISO”, “compress PDF”, etc.
With the new editor planned for Linux Mint 22 users will be able to reorder and move any Nemo Actions they install, including into dedicated menus, sub-menus, etc — which will be especially helpful to those who install lots of these nifty add-ons.
