Today marks the release of version 24.10 of Shotcut, the open-source, free, and cross-platform video editing software built on Qt, which incorporates its first AI feature.
This update comes a month and a half after Shotcut 24.09. The new version adds a Speech to Text functionality under Subtitles, utilizing OpenAI’s Whisper technology thanks to the whisper.cpp project. A basic model is included by default, but users also have the option to download a more advanced model to enhance transcription capabilities.
The developers have mentioned that users might encounter occasional inaccuracies while employing the AI-driven speech-to-text feature, and noted that the current versions only support Apple Silicon GPUs. For further details, visit the release notes on the official Shotcut website.
In addition to the new features, Shotcut 24.10 boasts various transition enhancements, including Ripple Delete, which restores all clips included in a transition, Lift (non-ripple delete) that fills the gap created by the transition with adjacent clips, and a longer transition duration when moving an adjacent clip rather than detaching it and creating a gap.
In the latest update, Shotcut 24.10 introduces a decimals <number>
feature for numeric keywords in the GPS Text video filter. It also includes a new option to “Show Project in Folder” within the File menu, a “Remove” function in the context menu for Projects, and compatibility with the latest FFmpeg 7.1 multimedia framework.
Additionally, the “Recent Projects” section has been renamed to “Projects”, and the software now supports automatically hiding the Reframe video filter and button when GPU Effects is activated. The Export > Video > Resample button has been removed as well.
A number of bugs have been fixed to enhance stability, addressing random timeline crashes and issues when opening projects that contain an empty subtitle track. Improvements have also been made to the GPS Offset feature in the GPS Text video filter, the Slideshow Generator dialog, AVCHD video frame rate, the Reframe video filter, and the Time Remap filter.
You can download Shotcut 24.10 right now from the official website. It is available as a universal AppImage bundle, which allows you to run it on almost any GNU/Linux distribution without the need for installation. Additionally, Shotcut can also be installed as a Flatpak app from Flathub.
