Desktop email client Thunderbird has transitioned to a monthly release schedule, as evidenced by the recent arrival of version 136.0. This update introduces several new features aimed at improving user experience. One of the standout enhancements is the automatic adaptation of email messages to dark mode, along with a quick toggle option in the header, allowing users to avoid glaring white backgrounds in low-light environments.
Additionally, Thunderbird 136.0 debuts a new Appearance setting, granting users control over message threading and sorting order across all folders. This feature is particularly useful for those who prefer to have the latest messages displayed at the bottom.
The update also brings a range of notable fixes, such as resolving issues related to displaying addresses for HiDPI users, ensuring UI font size changes are uniformly applied, and addressing incorrect threading in unified folders. Other fixes include enhancements for IMAP notifications, attachment handling in saved .eml
files, and improvements to the overall performance of the client.
Furthermore, users will receive security patches to protect against newly identified vulnerabilities. While the Thunderbird snap version on Ubuntu will continue using the Extended Support Release (ESR), users who wish to upgrade to the latest release can switch to the beta channel in the App Center.
For those interested in downloading Thunderbird, it is available as a standalone binary for Linux, with links provided for Windows and macOS versions as well.
