Ubuntu 24.04 Addresses Bluetooth Audio Connection Problems: What You Need to Know

If you’re an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS user who often runs into problems connecting to Bluetooth audio devices, there’s good news: a significant update to the Bluetooth stack is being released this week.

Numerous users have reported issues where paired Bluetooth audio devices like earbuds and phones fail to connect after a system suspend or restart. Many end up making multiple attempts—up to 30—to reconnect, or they have to remove and re-pair the devices just to get them to work again, which is frustrating.

The root of the issue has been traced back to a Linux kernel change that affects how the Bluetooth stack, Bluez, reads stored device keys. This problem was highlighted in an upstream bug report.

Fortunately, Ubuntu 24.10 has not seen widespread issues because it includes a newer, patched version of Bluez. This patch has now been back-ported to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

After installing the update, users have reported smoother reconnections for their Bluetooth audio devices after reboots or suspends. For instance, one user noted that their OnePlus Nord Buds now reconnect seamlessly after waking from sleep, while another user praised the update for resolving connection issues with their Bose QC45 headphones.

If you’re experiencing these connection problems, or even if you aren’t, it’s a good idea to run an update and install the Bluez 5.72-0ubuntu5.1 update (along with its related packages). After rebooting, you should find that your Bluetooth connections work much more reliably.
