Ubuntu 26.04 Snapshot 1 has just been released, marking the first of five monthly development snapshots leading up to the expected stable version in April 2026. This initiative started during the Ubuntu 25.10 cycle and aims to refine an automated build and testing infrastructure. These snapshots are created for all Ubuntu flavours, not just the main edition.
Canonical emphasizes that these snapshots are referred to as “throwaway artefacts,” meaning they are not to be treated as official alpha builds. Developers are encouraged to submit their changes to the archives to see them included in upcoming snapshots.
What’s Noteworthy?
Snapshot 1 includes several foundational package updates and initial changes, but the major features intended for version 26.04 are not yet present. Unless there is a specific need to test this snapshot, it may not offer much of interest at this stage.
Looking ahead, Ubuntu 26.04 is expected to introduce exciting features like new desktop applications, an expanded App Center with DEB and APT management, and the rollout of the Prompting Client, which will enhance Snap functionality with security prompts reminiscent of Windows Vista’s UAC.
Snapshot 2 is anticipated to be released around December 18 to avoid a clash with the Christmas holiday season. The final release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is slated for April 23, 2026.
For those interested in trying out the snapshot, it can be downloaded from the following link. Remember that since 26.04 is in development, ongoing updates will be necessary, allowing users to seamlessly transition through future snapshots without needing to reinstall.
