Unlocking Accessibility: Shotcut 25.07 Video Editor Introduces Speech to Text Model Downloader

Shotcut 25.07 has been released, enhancing this open-source, cross-platform video editing software with several new features aimed at improving user experience. Released two and a half months after version 25.05, the latest update includes a Speech to Text model downloader and an Outline video filter. The Outline filter works with the input alpha channel, making it especially useful for assets with transparent backgrounds.

The new Speech to Text dialog now features a Whisper.cpp model downloader, allowing for easier transcription of audio into text. The release notes highlight that the Outline filter is similar to the Drop Shadow filter, in that its effectiveness may be diminished when applied to clips following a text filter. Instead, it is recommended to use it on a separate upper track with a text clip.

Additional updates include the capability to adjust audio gain by dragging the waveform peak line and an option to adjust clip gain or volume in the timeline settings. Users can now edit or trim timelines more efficiently, and new features include a Soft Focus filter set and an updated Slideshow Generator dialog, which now defaults to four hours of audio/video duration.

For audio editing, the Balance filter now features fader and surround balance adjustments for channels greater than two. The Copy Channel audio filter has also been upgraded to support four channels, while multiple Mask: Apply filters can now be added and used simultaneously. Furthermore, the trimming experience has been improved, allowing users to scrub while dragging and ripple-trim even when Ripple is turned off.

Several bugs have been resolved with this update, addressing issues related to the conversion of 10-bit full to limited range video, audio muting in multi-channel configurations, as well as various interface problems when working with specific device formats and filters.

For those interested in downloading the new version, Shotcut 25.07 is available as a universal AppImage bundle suitable for all Linux distributions. Detailed information on the changes can be found in the release notes.
