Upgrade Guide: Transitioning from Ubuntu 25.04 to Ubuntu 25.10

As of October 29, 2025, Canonical has officially opened the upgrade pathway for users of Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) to upgrade to the latest version, Ubuntu 25.10 (Questing Quokka). Although Ubuntu 25.10 was released on October 9, the upgrade option had not been accessible until now. Prior to this, it was possible to force an upgrade using the update-manager -d command, but it wasn’t advisable due to potential complications that could lead to system instability.

Before proceeding with the upgrade, it’s essential to ensure your current system is up-to-date and that you have created a backup of your important files. While users may receive a notification that Ubuntu 25.10 is available, they can also initiate the upgrade manually. This can be done via the Software Updater application or by executing the update-manager -c command in the terminal.

Upon launching the Software Updater, users will be prompted when Ubuntu 25.10 is available. Clicking the “Upgrade” button will bring up a dialog with further details about the upgrade process. After confirming the upgrade, necessary checks will be performed to ensure compatibility.

During the upgrade, the updater will notify users about any third-party packages that may block the process, recommending their uninstallation beforehand. Users will also receive a summary detailing packages that will be upgraded, installed, or removed, along with the estimated download size.

Once the downloading phase is complete, the installation will commence. After the installation finishes, a notification will appear regarding obsolete packages, with the option to keep or remove them—removal is recommended for optimal performance.

Finally, when prompted, users should save their work and restart their computer to complete the upgrade process. Upon reboot, users will be able to enjoy the new features and improvements of Ubuntu 25.10 (Questing Quokka).
