Ubuntu 24.10 is set for release in October, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Ubuntu. This version features special nods to its history, including a few ‘easter eggs’.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Highlighting a classic element from Ubuntu’s early days, the color brown plays a key role.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In homage to its first version, Ubuntu 4.10 ‘Warty Warthog’, the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 reintroduces a ‘warty brown’ accent color for users to apply to their interface.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Accompanying this nostalgic touch is the GNOME 47 desktop environment, which now supports accent colors, enhancing user customization.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

“Er, doesn’t Ubuntu already have that?”,<\/em> you inquire.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Indeed, it does – the distribution has implemented its own version<\/a> since 2022.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

However, now that upstream GNOME officially supports accent color customization, Ubuntu will adopt this “official” method, although it will keep most of the Yaru accent color palette, with orange remaining as the default selection.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 release, “warty brown” will be introduced as an additional option for accent colors, affecting UI components like toggles, switches, and hover effects, as well as several Yaru icons, including folder icons.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all\u2026<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Ubuntu developers also add \u201csupport for playing a startup sound\u201d to GNOME Shell 47, and include the \u201dwarty startup sound\u201d in the Yaru sounds package for when the option is enabled.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Many enthusiasts remember the distinguished login sound of Ubuntu, but not everyone knows that the original chime from Ubuntu 4.10 was quite different. It brought a longer, more reflective tone, unlike the shorter, upbeat rhythm many are accustomed to. Having started with Ubuntu 7.10 myself, I only recently discovered the older, “Warty” startup sound.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

As we approach the upcoming anniversary release of Ubuntu, expect to see more tributes to its heritage. I would not be surprised to see a reimagined version of the very basic wallpaper from the past. Stay tuned, as I will continue to report any nostalgic additions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
